HOUSTON – August 15, 2023 – Today, Protect and Serve Texas PAC (PSTX PAC) issued the following statement after the radical, pro-defund police organization–the Texas Organizing Project (TOP)–endorsed Sheila Jackson Lee for Houston mayor:
“Birds of a feather flock together. That’s why the radical Texas Organizing Project proudly endorsed Sheila Jackson Lee, as they know she will implement their disastrous policies to defund–and ultimately abolish–police departments,” PSTX PAC spokesperson Donald Baker said.
“This endorsement should leave no doubt that when Jackson Lee says ‘reprogramming,’ she means ‘defunding’ the police,’ taking away critical resources our men and women in blue need now more than ever to tackle violent crime on the streets of Houston.”
In 2020, TOP promoted pro-defund police messages, even going so far as to suggest that police departments should eventually be ‘abolished.’
In a 2020 letter to Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, TOP joined the ranks of radical organizations calling for ‘reimagining’ policing and ‘redirecting resources’ from police departments:
“Cities like Austin, Boston, Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia are already taking bold steps to reimagine policing and redirect resources from the police to initiatives like those mentioned here. As Mayor of the fourth largest city in the country, we are imploring you to join with other courageous leaders in adopting bold initiatives that prioritize people over policing.”
