HOUSTON – August 7, 2023 – Today, Protect and Serve Texas PAC (PSTX PAC) issued the following statement after John Whitmire announced his plan to bring in 200 Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers to the streets of Houston to help tackle rising crime if he is elected mayor in November:
“Today’s announcement by Senator Whitmire underscores exactly why he is needed as Houston’s next mayor,” PSTX PAC spokesperson Donald Baker said. “As the city continues to grow, so too will the need for additional law enforcement resources, and a partnership with DPS will go a long way in addressing Houstonians’ number one priority, fighting crime.”
Whitmire’s announcement expands on his commitment to coordinate a “law enforcement surge” before day one as Houston’s next mayor, helping to shore up Houston law enforcement in light of the Houston Police Department (HPD) staffing levels falling; with than 300 police officers compared to 25 years ago. An investigation by the Houston Chronicle last month found that police response times to 911 calls were the slowest in decades.
“Law enforcement is short in Houston,” Whitmire told Houston Landing. “People are coming up to me in large numbers saying, ‘You’ve got to do something.’”
“We would welcome any help we can get. DPS troopers would be a big asset for us for accidents, traffic control, speeding,” Houston Police Officers’ Union (HPOU) president Douglas Griffith said in response to the announcement. “When you’re talking about bodies, we can use whatever we can get.”
