Protect and Serve Texas PAC Welcomes “Defund Queen” Sheila Jackson Lee to Houston Mayoral Race

HOUSTON – May 1, 2023 – Today, Protect and Serve Texas PAC officially welcomed “Defund Queen” Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) to the 2023 Houston mayoral race, highlighting an abysmal record of public positions hostile to law enforcement professionals. Despite Houstonians naming rising crime as the top issue on their minds heading into November, self-described “Queen” Sheila Jackson Lee continues to double down on her support for the ‘Defund the Police’ movement and demonize the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities.

“Congresswoman Lee is a known quantity in the Houston community, and in more than two decades in Washington, her policy positions have only led to a more hostile environment for police officers because of her repeated demonization of law enforcement,” said PAC spokesperson, Donald Baker.

Baker added, “Law enforcement officials do not have a friend in Sheila Jackson Lee, and we hope Houston voters pay close attention to her radical anti-police and pro-defund record heading into November.”

Here are just a few of Jackson Lee’s public positions supporting policies to cripple and demonize law enforcement.

  • Most recently, Jackson Lee joined Rev. Al Sharpton and the radical anti-police National Action Network to campaign for Chicago Mayor-elect Brandon Johnson, praising him for his vision, which includes “redirecting money away from policing”:

    • Asked whether Johnson’s win offered any lessons for her bid, Jackson Lee replied, “It was a people’s race. And I hope to make this a people’s race.”

  • While promoting the “George Floyd Justice in Policing Act” in June 2020, Jackson Lee said her bill "answers the concerns" of radical protesters calling to ‘defund the police’:

    • "I want them to know this bill answers their concerns,” Jackson Lee told Houston’s ABC 13. “What I hear when they say defund, they want reprogrammed dollars."

  • Jackson Lee proudly joined radical left “squad” member and outspoken advocate for defunding police departments, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) in sponsoring the “Law Enforcement Trust and Integrity Act of 2020” to weaponize the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate and prosecute law enforcement:

  • In July 2021, Jackson Lee tweeted “How Much Longer Will We Have To Wait For Responsible Legislation To Address The Bad Behavior That Occurs In Bad Policing”:

  • During a March 2022 House Judiciary Committee hearing on Reimagining Public Safety,” Jackson Lee praised Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (D-PA) for "debunking misinformation" about how the City of Philadelphia defunded its police department, despite the fact that the city’s police budget was cut by $33 million:

    • “…I also appreciate [Scanlon’s] courage, as a crime victim, in helping to debunk misinterpretation of defund police. Thank you so very much for your courage.”

  • When pressed, Jackson Lee tried to deny that “defunding the police” means defunding the police, instead calling it ‘reimagining’ public safety:

    • “…obviously, ‘reimagining’ means you fund housing, education, and policing…”

  • Ahead of the New York City mayoral race in 2021, Jackson Lee appeared on CNN to shift the blame to guns, not defunding of police departments, for the rise in violent crime.
