Statement on University of Houston Poll Showing Jackson Lee Underwater Among Houston Voters

Updated: Sep 5, 2023

HOUSTON – July 25, 2023 – Today, Protect and Serve Texas PAC (PSTX PAC) issued the following statement after a new poll released by the University of Houston’s Hobby School of Public Affairs showed mayoral candidate Sheila Jackson Lee underwater among Houston voters, with a net negative favorability rating and 44% of likely voters saying they “would never” vote for Jackson Lee to serve as Houston’s next mayor:

“It is no surprise that Sheila Jackson Lee is so unpopular with Houston voters given her dismal record and positions on crime and public safety – which Houston voters have made crystal clear is the top issue on their minds heading into November’s election. Houstonians are fed up with out-of-control crime that threatens their safety and property. The last thing Houston needs is a mayor who wants to defund the police or ‘reprogram’ funding away from law enforcement officers and toward failed public safety experiments like we’ve seen in other major cities,” PSTX PAC Spokesman Donald Baker said.

“It’s also no surprise that Houstonians have a very positive view of John Whitmire, who has stood firmly on the side of law enforcement his entire career, and knows that the efforts to defund and demonize police officers have hampered recruitment and put Houston at risk of becoming another Chicago or San Francisco. Houston voters have a stark choice to make in November, and we urge them to help protect the safety of their families, their neighbors, and their businesses by electing John Whitmire for mayor.”

The poll released by the University of Houston today shows that:

  • 44% percent of likely voters would never vote for Jackson Lee, compared to only 13% who said the same about John Whitmire.

  • 48% of likely voters hold an unfavorable opinion of Jackson Lee (40% ‘very unfavorable’), compared to only 16% who hold an unfavorable opinion of John Whitmire.

  • In a runoff election scenario, Whitmire holds a clear advantage with 51% of the vote intention to Jackson Lee’s 33%, with 13% likely voters saying they are undecided.

  • In a runoff election, Whitmire holds a 5% vote intention advantage over Jackson Lee among women.

  • Whitmire is the favored runoff candidate of Independents by a 60% to 18% margin over Jackson Lee.

Houstonians Are Fed Up With Crime

In response to this weekend’s Fox 26 report that business owners are becoming increasingly frustrated with break-ins and crime afflicting the streets of Houston, PSTX PAC spokesperson Donald Baker issued the following statement:

“Unfortunately, stories like these are the reality that Houstonians live with every single day in their neighborhoods, and it’s the reality that politicians like Sheila Jackson Lee want to ignore so that the facts on the ground don’t get in the way of their own political narratives pushing for the defunding of law enforcement.”
