HOUSTON – September 20, 2023 – Protect and Serve Texas PAC (PSTX PAC) today issued a statement following Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s attempts to walk back, deny, and ignore her radical anti-police record during a recent interview with the Houston Chronicle editorial board, during which she admitted she has shifted her tone on public safety based on polling showing Houston voters are fed up with crime in the city:
“The polling says that Houstonians are concerned about public safety,” Jackson Lee told the Houston Chronicle editorial board. “That means I have to look straight in the eye and talk about the criminal justice system and crime.”
PSTX PAC spokesperson Donald Baker issued the following statement:
“Congresswoman Lee’s sudden interest in public safety is too little, too late. Houstonians already know her radical positions supporting defunding and ‘reprogramming’ funds from police departments, as well as her hostility toward law enforcement in general. Whether it’s sponsoring legislation to ‘answer the concerns’ of radical protesters calling for defunding the police, campaigning for radical anti-police politicians, or praising George Soros as he funds pro-defund organizations in the United States, Congresswoman Lee has established herself as a centerpiece of the ‘defund police’ movement. If she truly wanted to engage in a serious discussion about tackling crime in Houston, Congresswoman Lee should have demonstrated her commitment to supporting the men and women who work to protect our communities every day, rather than supporting policies, politicians, and people who want to dismantle police departments.”
Houston Police Officers’ Union President Douglas Griffith said the following of Jackson Lee’s sudden shift in tone on public safety:
"With the Houston Police Department facing staffing shortages, strained resources, and an increasingly hostile environment from the thousands out on bond for violent offenses, we need a mayor who has a demonstrated commitment and record of supporting law enforcement – not someone who gives us lip service for political expediency. This November's mayoral election will be a referendum on the future of public safety in our city, and Houston voters need to know that law enforcement supports John Whitmire and opposes those who have supported defunding of police departments."
